An important civic space in the heart of Cincinnati, Washington Park has continued to evolve over the last 150 years to accommodate the needs and aspirations of the community. IBI Group provided surveying and civil engineering services for the 2012 redevelopment of the Park, conceptualizing the use of drywells for sustainable storm water management.

Due to unusual geology for the region, the area of Over-the-Rhine that Washington Park is located in contains a large, variable depth, sand and gravel layer. The deep water table found within the sand and gravel layer provided an ideal opportunity for storm water injection.

Our team designed a drywell storm sewer system that directs stormwater from the site into a sand layer 35 feet below the Park. This type of system is zero discharge for the 100-year storm event and is very rare for this region of Ohio. This non-typical drywell system for southwest Ohio was performance tested by the Cincinnati Fire Department and passed with flying colors.

IBI’s services also included grading of the site, developing testing protocols for soil and sanitary, a new streetscape for the entire perimeter of the Park, and a new traffic signal system. The project was designed in Civil 3D, making visualization and modeling easier for the entire design team.
